Worcester Chapter of American Guild of Organists hosts Pipe Organ Encounter
Chapel of the Holy Spirit
From July 20-26, 42 young people from New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and California will converge on Worcester for a week-long Pipe Organ Encounter. The event will be coordinated by Frank Corbin, director and faculty coordinator of the POE, and immediate past Dean of the Worcester Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Pipe Organ Encounters is an educational outreach program of the American Guild of Organists, open to those 13 to 18 years old, who have intermediate proficiency at the piano or organ. Since its inception in 1988, Pipe Organ Encounters have introduced more than 2,000 young people to the organ through instruction in organ playing, repertoire, history, design, and construction. These regional summer organ music institutes provide private and group instruction, opportunities for ecumenical worship, and the chance for young musicians to meet others with similar interests.

Students will live on the Assumption College campus, with masterclasses, private lessons, practice sessions and performances held at 22 different churches around the city, including the Assumption College Chapel, All Saints Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, and Wesley United Methodist Church. A special feature this year is a trip to Gloucester, where students will tour the C.B. Fisk Organ factory, followed by an organ concert by Brett Maguire at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall.

This year's POE has attracted a distinguished faculty of 22 regional, national, and internationally renowned organists, including Diane Meredith Belcher, Peter Stoltzfus Berton, James David Christie, Peter Krasinski, Patricia Snyder, Grant Moss, Larry Schipull, William and Marjorie Ness, Gregory D'Agostino and Frank Corbin. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a masterclass with Paul Jacobs, chair of the Organ department at the Juilliard School of Music, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest young organists in the world, and is an alumnus of the first Pipe Organ Encounter held 20 years ago. The faculty recital on Tuesday, July 22 at 7:30 PM in the Assumption College Chapel, will be open to the public.

Major funding for Pipe Organ Encounters is also provided by the American Institute of Organ Builders and Margaret R. Evans. Permanently endowed AGO scholarships are provided in memory of Charlene Brice Alexander, Robert S. Baker, Seth Bingham, Clarence Dickinson, Philip Hahn, Charles N. Henderson, Alfred E. Lunsford, Ned Siebert, and Martin M. Wick; and in honor of Philip E. Baker, Ruth Milliken and Morgan and Mary Simmons.

Sponsored by: American Guild of Organist Chapters in Springfield (MA), New Hampshire, New Jersey, San Joachim Valley (CA), as well as by St. Mark's Lutheran Church, in Glastonbury, CT. The national headquarters of the American Guild of Organists and the Worcester Chapter are also major sponsors.
