"The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child"
- 7:30 AM-2:00 PM
Weston Auditorium
- $115, which includes the workshop and lunch
Rick Lavoie, an internationally recognized expert on learning disabilities, is returning to Fitchburg State College to present a full day workshop.
The workshop, "The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child," will be held Monday, March 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Weston Auditorium. It is recommended for teachers, parents, psychologists, counselors, social workers, coaches, graduate students and caregivers.
Co-sponsors of the workshop are Graduate and Continuing Education and the Center for Professional Studies at Fitchburg State College.
Lavoie, a Fitchburg State alumnus, is a specialist and consultant who has served as an administrator of residential programs for children with special needs since 1972. He holds three degrees in special education and has served as an adjunct professor or visiting lecturer at numerous universities including Syracuse, Harvard, Gallaudet, Manhattanville College, University of Alabama and Georgetown. Lavoie serves as a consultant for several agencies and organizations including Public Broadcasting Service, the New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, Girl Scouts of America, Child Magazine and Harvard University. He is a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Learning Disabilities Association.
Lavoie has delivered his message to more than 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America, Australia, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He has the distinction of having delivered keynote addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the United States: Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children and Children with Attention Deficit Disorder.
This seminar presents an innovative and field-tested model that enables teachers to better understand and foster student motivation at all grade levels. The workshop begins with an exploration of some of the common misconceptions related to student motivation and some of the common strategies that are, simply, ineffective (competition, reward systems, punishment). Specific approaches and strategies will then be presented that will enable teachers and parents to motivate students and maintain that motivation throughout the school year. This workshop, based on the book by the same name, encourages teachers to examine and identify each child's motivational style and to design motivational strategies that will inspire the child to reach his or her potential.
Registration for the event is open through Feb. 25. The cost of the event for teachers seeking Professional Development Points is $115, which includes the workshop, lunch and four PDPs.
Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Kay Flynn '57 Special Education Scholarship Fund and to the Anne May Special Education Scholarship Fund. Flynn and May are former professors of special education at Fitchburg State who taught Rick Lavoie when he was a student.
