Description: PPL presents Rhode Island 101 - Selections from Our Rhode Island Collection, an exhibit mounted in conjunction with local author Tim Lehnert's recent book Rhode Island 101 and talks he will give at the Library on October 1 (PPL's 2009 Annual Meeting) and Sunday, October 18 (Central Library Open House, 1 - 4 pm). Images and items exhibited correspond to cited references in Lehnert's book. The photographs on display are all from the Rhode Island Collection, and the books and pamphlets are from PPL Special Collections. The exhibit is displayed in the Library's Marble Staircase (outside Special Collections on the 3rd floor) and will run through October.

Access to both collections is open to the public whenever the Library is open. To use the Rhode Island Collection, consult the Reference staff; use of PPL Special Collections is available by appointment with Richard Ring (455-8021).

The Rhode Island Collection (one of PPL's signature special collections) consists of nearly 10,000 books, over 7,000 photographs of people, places and buildings, historic and current maps pertaining to Rhode Island cities and towns, clippings, pamphlets, and selected documents from the State of Rhode Island and the City of Providence. Our Rhode Island Index (card file) has been maintained since the early 1900s and offers access to the materials in this collection as well as to the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin for 1900-2004. The Library maintains a complete run of the Providence Journal on microfilm from 1829-present. Articles from the Providence Journal Archives Online (1983-present) can be accessed from the Library or from home. The genealogy collection features Providence city directories, house directories, family biographies, Arnold's Vital Records and regimental histories of the Civil War.
