| Description: | The "rural" cemetery movement was inspired by romantic perceptions of nature, art, national identity, and the melancholy theme of death. Established seven years after Mount Auburn in 1838, the founders of Rural Cemetery never officially decided on a name for the cemetery, so the name used in the incorporation paper stuck. Six early presidents of the Worcester County Horticultural Society were also presidents of Rural Cemetery. In this presentation we will visit some of the notable graves and observe the great variety of tree species, some nearly as old as the cemetery itself. | |
