| Description: | Native American people, 19th century New England farmers and the Shakers of Lebanon, New York had at least one thing in common: All were skilled materials scientists in their use of wood. By selecting oak, ash, birch and poplar, artisans crafted a wide array of everyday necessities with varying characteristics of density, strength, flexibility, or even water resistance. Wood Matters, an exhibit from Fruitlands Museum's permanent collection, features items ranging from tiny toy gardening tools, to needle cases and baskets, to a full-size birchbark canoe. The makers' expert knowledge of wood properties and inventive imagination is often combined with exquisite attention to detail and artistry, as demonstrated by intricate designs, symmetry and scale. Arrows and bows, kitten-head and feather baskets, toys and Thoreau & Company pencils are among more than 50 items showcased in three of the four galleries on museum grounds. The exhibit will run from now through November 15, 2009. |
