| Description: | Slater Mill is the birthplace of modern American industry. This three building tour takes visitors back to the era when Moses brown, Samuel Slater and others launched the Industrialization of America. Group by appointment only. In the Slater Mill, opened in 1793, visitors will see the original factory floor and machine layout as it was in Mr. Slater's day. The Wilkinson Mill, opened in 1810, served as a machine tool part shop in service to Mr. Slater's original mill and is the birthplace of the precision screw. In the 1758 Sylvanus Brown House visitors will see how a middle class artisan family would have lived in the late 18th century. The tour, conducted by trained, costumed interpreters, will emphasize the machine technology, capitalization, power generation, working conditions and production processes that characterized America's industrial origins. One travel guide describes a visit to Slater Mill as follows: "We were frankly startled by the completeness of this exceptional visitor attraction...Interpreters have a remarkable amount to show you...There's nothing quite like this." Each day during the summer season, the skilled interpreters at Slater Mill present demonstrations of the work that was done here and fascinating stories of our history. Water Power Location In the Wilkinson Mill see the wheel begin to power the machines upstairs and find out how it all happens, from river to machine. Slater Story Location Come and find out the true story behind Samuel Slater and the beginning of the Industrialization of America. Was he a genius with a photographic memory; the first industrial spy to make it big; or the first major proponent of commerce driven commercialism in this country? Cotton Processing Location How did cotton get from the plant to the factory? Find out how the US transformed its economy, and created problems for its political stability, in the early 19th century through the use of this plant. Gin cotton by hand and machine and hear how this process affected all aspects of American life. Flax Processing Location What is flax? Follow the story of this plant that has been used for millennia to create beautiful clothing. From the field to fiber and on to thread you will see each step in the creation of linen. Water Power & Closing the Water Wheel Location Each day workers would shut down the gates and stop the flow of the river to the wheel. Come and discuss water power and the river as we finish supplying hydropower to the machines in the shop for the day. |
