Description: An American icon, the apple is the focus of The Nature of Apples, Art and Memory, an exhibition here at Fruitlands Museum co-sponsored by Freedoms Way Heritage Area . Featuring artwork drawn from an private collection, The Nature of Apples presents both the beauty of the fruit and its role in the agricultural economy of the Nashoba Valley. Artists ranging from Currier and Ives to renowned Provincetown painter Karl Knaths are represented in this show, which includes landscape, still life, and genre scenes.

The apples role in regional agriculture will also be highlighted in the exhibition. Apple farms have long been a staple of the area, known as the birthplace of Johnny Appleseed. Yet, over the recent past, as development and economic pressures have come to bear, apple orchards have disappeared from the region at an alarming rate. Freedom’s Way Heritage Association is documenting this vanishing way of life through a recorded oral history presentation in conjunction with the painting exhibition. The Farmers Voices of the Valley’s apple growers will resonate through The Nature of Apples with lectures and readings, telling their stories of work and change to meet the changing times.

Saturday, September 19; Repeats, October 17
