Description: | March is Womens History Month and March 8th is International Womens Day. We are thrilled to announce that we will have a guest here at our church who has worked on issues of womens health and rights globally for over 40 years. To help us celebrate, she will be offering an hour-long workshop at noon after the March 5th Sunday service. WHY DID SHE DIE?: A 40 YEAR FEMINIST RETROSPECTIVE on GLOBAL REPRODUCTIVE ISSUES WHO: Dr. Therese McGinn WHEN: Sunday, March 5th in Fellowship Hall at 12pm WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Church, 90 Holden St, Worcester, MA WHY: Because we need to honor women at home and abroad! Presenter: Dr. Therese McGinn (sister of UUCW member Joan McGinn) is Professor Emerita of Population and Family Health at Columbia University and Founding Director of the RAISE INITIATIVE: Reproductive Health Access, Information and Services in Emergencies. Her service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon, West Africa got her started on a career focusing on womens health and rights. After achieving her Masters degree, she returned to West Africa for 8 years, and later extended her research and program work to 15 countries, including ones in Asia and Latin America. In more recent years, she transitioned to a focus on womens sexual and reproductive health and rights into countries affected by war, and the refugees that result from these conflicts, a daunting and dangerous task. Along the way, she completed a Doctor of Public Health degree at Columbia University and taught and mentored graduate students there. She currently serves as Chair of the Funding Committee of the Advisor Group of a UK-based organization, Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises and Member of the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee of Doctors of the World US. Dr. McGinn will lecture and facilitate a spirited discussion of challenges inherent in womens lives in low-income countries and in countries in conflict. DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR ABOUT THERESES REVOLUTIONARY WORK!! It will take place at 12 noon in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, March 5th after the service. FREE and open to all! |
