|Description:||October 2019 is the Bicentennial of the commissioning and departure of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) missionaries to Hawai'i. Eighteen young men and women left the Long Wharf in Boston on October 23, 1819, and anchored in Kona, Hawai'i, on April 4, 1820, forever tying New England to Hawai'i. Commissioned by Hawaiian Mission Houses to honor the bicentennial of Opukaha'ia's death in 1818, My Name is Opukaha'ia brings to life the story of a Native Hawaiian man who inspired the ABCFM to send Protestant missionaries to the Hawaiian Kingdom.
This is the first time Hawaiian Mission Houses is taking this award-winning History Theater program to the continental United States, though it has toured extensively throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
Based on primary source research, this emotionally powerful play is written by and starring Moses Goods, one of the premier actors, writers, and storytellers in Hawai'i. The program also features Po'ai Lincoln, a singer/musician, and Hawaiian Mission Houses' Cultural Programs Coordinator, who will accompany the program with Hawaiian Oli (chant) and Mele (song).
"A riveting historical performance by one of Hawai'i's
greatest actors." - James Charisma, Honolulu Magazine
