Description: Under the compassionate and skillful guidance of Jan Willis, well-known teacher and scholar-practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, this weekend course will be an intensive exploration of how a social construct ("race"), when used as a tool of discrimination that advantages one group over another ("racism"), inflicts tremendous harm and suffering. We will watch documentaries and other films, listen to rap and to Broadway tunes, read specific pieces that explore how racism "feels" (James Baldwin, Debbie Irving, Claudia Rankin and others), and do exercises and meditations together--all aimed at having us recognize, reflect upon, and go deeper into this complex and painful phenomenon. Everyone is welcome to attend.
