Description: | Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920): Presented by Donna WInant Italian painter, sculptor, and draughsman, born in Leghorn, of Jewish descent. Modigliani studied in Venice and Florence and then went to Paris in 1906. The legend of his life as a Montparnasse art district eccentric -handsome, proud and aristocratic in demeanor, amorous, impoverished, drugged or drunk - was cultivated by his literary circle of friends, especially after his tragic death at age 35. This legend, however, cannot negate his intense passion for the creation of his sculpture and his signature, outstanding portraits. He loved his country dearly and embaced its artistic achievements. As he lay dying in Paris, he breathed his final words, "Cara cara Italia." Home sweet home. |
