Background:

John Henry’s Hammer Coffeehouse welcomes friends and collaborators Jim Scott and Stan Strickland on February 16th.

Composer, guitarist and singer Jim Scott creates music that celebrates peace and ecology. Singer, saxophonist, flutist, actor and composer Stan Strickland has performed throughout the US and many other countries and with jazz greats such as Take Six, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann.

Jim may be best known to the Worcester area as the co-composer of the Winter Consort’s celebrated Missa Gaia / Earth Mass that has been performed by several local choral groups in recent years. Multi-instrumentalist Stan has played the lead sax part in Jim’s performances of the Missa Gaia and played on recordings of Jim’s music. Jim’s recorded 7 albums of original music, and compiled and arranged “The Earth and Spirit Songbook.”

"Formidable...singer-guitarist Jim Scott is one of the most engaging and warm performers ever encountered. ...His songs have extraordinary lyricism and grace, with hopeful messages that promote peace and harmony." Fred Kraft, KUGN radio

"[Jim Scott]'s an excellent guitar player with a soothing, quality voice. Scott uses both well to deliver his messages: peace, justice and save the environment." Elliot Jones, Press Journal, Vero Beach

"For those familiar with Scott's talents and those who aren't, the chance to hear [his] music ...shouldn't be missed." David DeMar Jr., Watertown Daily Times

Stan’s latest CD Love & Beauty features Stan’s creative arrangements of great jazz classics and originals. Stan has also collaborated with choreographers Alvin Ailey, Jose Limon, and Bill T. Jones. As an actor, he’s had leading roles in Boston Art Group's Harlem Renaissance, Notheastern University's Crossing John, and Maggie's Riff, produced by the Vineyard Playhouse. Stan is profiled/featured, in a new film entitled Black Man Up.

"Stan is an amazing performer to work with. He brings the danger and excitement of jazz to everything he says and does. It can be dramatic just watching him breathe.” playwright John Lipman, about "Coming Up for Air: An AutoJAZZograph"

"Boston's favorite Jazzman" Iris Fanger, the Patriot Ledger

"Saxophonist Stan Strickland has been a mainstay of the Boston jazz scene for more than 30 years. He may be on his way to becoming a mainstay of its theater scene, too." Boston Globe, 2006
