Description: The Auburn Avenue Research Library will host Dr. Randal Maurice Jelks, an associate professor of American and African American Studies at the University of Kansas, as he discusses his latest publication, Benjamin Elijah Mays: Schoolmaster of the Movement. In this first full-length biography of Benjamin E. Mays, Jelks chronicles Mays life, beginning with his humble origins in Epworth, South Carolina, his doctoral education and his work with institutions, such as the NAACP. The book also explores Mays' ability to connect the message of Christianity with the responsibility to challenge injustices during the uprising of the civil rights movement.
