| Description: | In response to two widely reported suicides in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts legislature passed its sweeping Bullying Prevention Law in 2010. Among other provisions, the law mandated notification of a bullying incident to the parents of both the perpetrator and the victim, and directed the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to adopt regulations governing parent notification. The Jacob Edwards Library in Southbridge has been attempting to raise awareness on the issues of Bullying Prevention and has a growing collection of materials - books and DVDs for the community to borrow. In January 2012, the library hosted a presentation by Dr. Sarah Cavanaugh Ferguson on bullying in general, and we are now focusing on the additional issues that are presented to GLBTQ students. Pam Garramore has extensive experience in presenting programs on LGBTQ and straight audience to raise awareness in the community among those with a concern for LGBTQ awareness and rights. This program is presented as part of the Pride in Southbridge series. Pam Garramore has taught elementary school and designed and presented personal development workshops. As Greater Boston PFLAG’s executive director, she conducts educational programs annually in middle and high schools statewide, and in community, corporate, and religious organizations. Please join us on June 26th at 6:30 p.m. to learn more about Bullying Prevention and other important information on the topic and see how a community can impact the situation. Pride in Southbridge was first celebrated at Jacob Edwards Library, in 2006. Its goal is to raise awareness of the combined contributions the GLBT and straight community makes to the Tri-Community region The event is organized in June each year. |
