| Description: | The Nativity of Christ, also known as Christmas, is celebrated in many cultures around the world. Told throughout generations, the iconic story has many varied traditions. Using icons from the collection this exhibit articulates the story of the Nativity from the Russian Orthodox perspective. Laura Garrity-Arquitt curates this seasonal exhibition. There are 6 significant icons in the exhibition, dated from the 17th to the 19th century. These are rare subject in the Old Believers (OB) style, who separated from the official Russian Orthodox Church after 1666 as a protest against church reforms introduced by Patriarch Nikon between 1652-66. Old Believers continue liturgical practices that the Russian Orthodox Church maintained before the implementation of these reforms. These OB icons depict the entire nativity narrative from the announcement of Christs birth, the seeking of shelter for the birth showing Mary on a donkey accompanied by Joseph, the arrival of the 3 Magi, the birth, the washing of the baby Jesus, and the temptation of Joseph. Most Orthodox Christians in central and Eastern Europe and Russia celebrate Christmas on January 7th (hence the dates for this exhibition.) |
