| Description: | Explore the world of knights in shining armor, of princesses trapped in a castle, and of fire breathing dragons. Fun and excitement at the Higgins Armory Museum during school vacation week. Live demonstrations daily and art workshops. (Museum Open: Monday, February 15, 2010, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.) Live Arms and Armor Show - 11:30 am, 1:00 pm, & 2:30 pm - Free with Museum Admission Why armor? Who wore it, who made it, and why are there so many different types? In this interactive program, discover the history of armor; from its evolution from mail to plate armor to its disappearance (and modern reappearance on the battlefield). Volunteers from the audience will have opportunities to help with the demonstration. (On Wednesday, February 17th the show times will be 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm) Make-Your-Own Shield Workshop - All Day - $5 per shield Discover the history of heraldry and then create your very own unique heraldic shield. Learn what the different "charges" or symbols that decorate the shields stand for and what colors represent courage, generosity, loyalty, or hope. Can you create a shield that tells everyone about who you are? The Art of Swordplay Workshop - 12:30 pm - $10 per person Experience the arts of the knightly longsword and the Renaissance rapier. In this 45-minute workshop you will sample the historical skills of swordsmanship, using the 2-handed sword of the medieval knight and the deadly rapier of the Renaissance gentleman. No experience needed and all equipment is supplied. Workshop participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing with long pants and athletic footwear. Class is open to age 14 and up, or age 10 and up with a participating parent. Space is limited. For reservations, contact the museum at (508) 853-6015. |
