| Description: | Kaleidoscope is a photo/essay exhibit, attempting to address a single guiding question: "What is family?" This collection, created by Becker "Psychology of Family" students, includes original writing, representative quotes, and excerpts from transcribed interviews with local individuals who are living examples of the ways in which "family" is being redefined in the new millennium. Among those represented: a homeless family talks about their fears, a mother explains how she redefined 'family' after surviving the deaths of an infant daughter and teenage son, a single mother reflects on the joys and hardships of "the cards I dealt myself," and a family with 'two moms' talks about their journey into parenthood. Employing ethnographic research methods, the students conducted, transcribed, and analyzed 39 interviews with more than 80 diverse strangers, catalogued over 60 hours of field observations, critiqued 21 pieces of popular literature and numerous articles from peer-reviewed journals, and photographed more than 200 representative artifacts.
