Description: On the banks of the Sea of Galilee, near the ancient site of Migdal in Israel, a daring underwater excavation brought forth a 2,000 year old boat. Dr. Shelly Wachsmann of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, along with his team of specialists, used the latest technological advances in underwater exploration to locate, excavate and package the boat (in its entirety!) to then transport to a specially prepared conservation pool. The 26-foot-long vessel, built mainly of Lebanese cedar and oak, has been radiocarbon-dated to circa 15 BC. Research has revealed that this boat is the type described in the Gospels, used by the disciples of Jesus; an arrowhead like those used by Roman archers in the First Jewish Revolt was found on the boat, leading to speculation that the vessel was used by Jewish rebels in the brutal Battle of Migdal (birthplace of Mary Magdalene) against a Roman fleet in 67 A.D. Wachsmann is the Meadows Professor of Biblical Archaeology at Texas A& M University. His book "The Sea of Galilee Boat" received the Biblical Archaeology Society's award for best popular book on archaeology.
