Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, MA
- Included with Admission
Join fellow readers and garden lovers as we launch Tower Hill Library's first book group. Our goal is simple: we'll read and discuss interesting books from various genres on plants, gardens, nature and the environment. We'll include some well-known titles but also will try to offer books that may have been overlooked but still well worth our time. All titles will be in print, available in the Tower Hill Library, public libraries, and for purchase in paperback and other formats.
The group is limited to 20 participants and we are currently full. The book group will be free for members and included with admission for non-members. If you'd like more information please contact Kathy Bell at librarian@towerhillbg.org or 508-869-6111 x-116.
This week's book will be:
The Garden of Invention: Luther Burbank and the business of breeding plants / Jane S. Smith. Born of Worcester County soil (in Lancaster in 1849) Burbank went on to live an incredible life at an incredible time but these days is all but forgotten. The list of his "inventions"-- from the potato, to the Burbank rose and Shasta daisy -- is astounding, as is the glimpse of horticulture in the late 19th, early 20th century.

Hypertufa Workshop
Sunday, 2/26/2012 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, MA
- Member $60, Nonmember $65
Instructor: Debra Pope
In this hands-on workshop, students will design and produce their own unique custom Hypertufa planters for their garden. "Hypertufa" is a mixture of cement, peat moss and perlite which resembles tufa, the light-weight porous limestone rock which was often carved into watering troughs, sinks, etc. Because of its porous nature, tufa makes an ideal planter, but it is difficult to come by and very expensive. Hypertufa provides the best of both worlds - a lightweight custom design but at an inexpensive cost. Please bring a filter mask, heavy rubber or latex gloves, trash bags and a mold (details will be provided upon registration).
