This lecture explores whether ancient Maya prophesies predict an end of days coming in December of 2012? Is modern science collecting evidence that an apocalypse is indeed upon is? Or are modern spiritualists correct that we are entering a new age of enlightenment and peace? Come join renowned Maya scholar Dr. Edwin Barnhart as he separates fact from fiction in this fascinating lecture. It is true that the Maya calendar comes to an important cyclical end on December 21, 2012 and that Maya sacred texts state that three previous world creations came to cataclysmic ends. The question remains, what did the ancient Maya actually say about the future? The answer lies not in pseudo science or messages from beyond, but in a better understanding of Maya religion and hieroglyphic texts.
Maya Exploration Center Director Dr. Ed Barnhart has two decades of experience in Mesoamerica as an archaeologist, an explorer and an instructor. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Explorer's Club and teaches National Science Foundation classes for college professors on Maya astronomy and sacred geometry. Admission is free and open to the public.
