ABSTRACT: The average distance problem was first proposed in the '70/'80 in image processing. However it gained attention only when Buttazzo, Oudet and Stepanov analyzed this problem in the context of optimal transport theory. In this talk we will present an overview of recent results concerning the classic average distance problem, and present some results about a penalized variant better suited for some applications like data points parameterization. Moreover, we will discuss evolution problems related to the average distance functional.
