The road of achieving your goals is seldom a straight line. It is up to us to make it a fun trip.

For this seminar, Fanny Mlinarsky, a Boston area high tech entrepreneur, will share her story and provide insights into todays fastest growing tech sector  wireless communications.

Born in the former Soviet Union, Mlinarsky arrived in New York at 15 years of age, finished Columbia University School of Engineering and moved to Boston in 1983 to start her career at Teradyne as a young design engineer. She has climbed up the technical latter, up to VP of Engineering role, at companies including Chipcom (acquired by 3Com), Concord Communications (went public), Star-tek (acquired by 3Com), Scope Communications (acquired by Hewlett Packard) and Agilent.

In 2002, she left Agilent to found Azimuth Systems, a Venture Capital funded Boston area wireless test equipment company, and served as Azimuths Chief Technology Officer for 5 years.

Mlinarsky founded octoScope in 2006 and became President of this growing high tech manufacturer of wireless test equipment.

This seminar will also recap some of Mlinarskys experiences as a woman in engineering. It will cover some history and overview of the incredible advancements of wireless technology. We will also discuss wireless test challenges.

The wireless industry is in the process of standardizing controlled environment Over The Air (OTA) testing for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radios.
MIMO OTA testing is new to the wireless industry. Legacy Single Input Single Output (SISO) wireless devices require limited OTA testing with about 90% of test coverage achievable on the bench via cabled connections. Modern wireless devices, such as smartphones, pads and sensors, have multiple radios (e.g. cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS) and internal antennas that are difficult to remove for testing. Thus, OTA testing is now needed on a much larger scale than in the past, calling for new generation smaller, less expensive OTA chambers.
MIMO radios are designed to adapt their operating mode to the changing channel conditions, optimizing throughput and minimizing packet error rate (PER) via a variety of techniques, with each transmitted packet selecting the technique best suited for a given airlink environment.

Engineers testing MIMO radios need to create a range of channel conditions in order to validate the radios adaptability and throughput performance in different environments.

In this session we will:

Overview MIMO and OFDM radio technologies and test challenges associated with validating these technologies
Discuss the emerging MIMO OTA test standards being developed by 3GPP and CTIA
Review MIMO OTA test solutions based on anechoic and reverberation chambers

Fanny Mlinarsky is President of octoScope, a wireless test solutions and services company. Her background includes hands-on product development and R&D management. Prior to octoScope Fanny was Founder and CTO of Azimuth Systems, a wireless test equipment vendor. She has been an active contributor to the wireless standards being developed at 802.11 and 3GPP.
