In the field of education, lines between disciplines are getting blurry. In order to understand how one learns physics, many researchers are not only drawing on the traditional fields related to education (such as cognitive science and psychology), but also fields ranging from linguistics to animal behavior to art history. My research (which, broadly, is interested in discourse in science) focuses on how students and scientists use analogy and categorization in physics, and this work has been informed by many of those disciplines. In this talk, I will outline some of the ways in which we understand mind and language and how these are brought to bear on how we understand science and learning.
