Abstract:
Frustrated by a lack of information about what students in CS2102 were actually learning, I tried a new grading system in B-term 2011: I identified 40-odd facts and skills outcomes that my course professed to teach, allocated points on assignments to individual outcomes, and computed each student's final grade based on mastery of the outcomes.
Lots of logistics (and several thousand spreadsheets) went into implementing this system in a 200+ student course. Was it worth it?
This talk reflects on this experiment, discussing its goals, successes, challenges, and impact. I'll include observations from using this again in a 4000-level course (software security) this term.
My goal is to foster general discussion on outcomes-based grading, partly so I can gain feedback from colleagues as I refine the system for this coming B-term.
