Maasai Educational Program and Performance

Education - Performance - WPI Only

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
7:00 PM-9:00 PM

Salisbury Laboratories
Room 115 (Kinnicutt Hall)

Three members of the Maasai from Kenya will present a lecture, slide show and performance this Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm in Kinnicutt Hall, Salisbury Labs 115. Come and enjoy Maasai traditional songs, dances and storytelling. The audience will learn about Maasai beliefs, community responsibilities and the challenges the Maasai face as they try to preserve cultural traditions in a time of significant changes in Africa.

The Maasai people of East Africa live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They have an estimated population of approximately a million people. As a result of global warming, droughts are becoming severe in East Africa, forcing the Maasai people to seek out alternative livelihoods. Maasai tribal leadership, the council of elders, is losing its power year after year as a result of emerging forms of leadership and governance. Join us on November 3rd to have the rare opportunity to see and hear first-hand about a vital part of the world which is trying to survive.

Sponsored by the Campus Center and Student Activities Department, Office of Diversity Programs, and Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division.
