Abstract: Engineering is regarded as a learned profession similar to medicine and law. What does it mean to be an engineering professional? Does this mean that in the practice of their profession, engineers are (should be) held to a higher standard of conduct than the general population? This presentation first explores the fundamental cannons of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) code of ethics for engineers and how these statements should influence the daily activities of persons engaged in the engineering profession. The second part of the seminar presents a number of highly publicized case studies where engineers were confronted with very serious ethical dilemmas. Finally the speaker will present a number of ethical dilemmas that he has faced in his professional career.
