Title:
Cognitive Radio: Beyond Dynamic Spectrum Access

Abstract:
Electromagnetic spectrum is a very valuable resource. Thus the current focus of work on cognitive radio technologies on Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) is clearly well justified. However, as envisioned in the original conceptualization of cognitive radio, other communication objectives can be achieved by making radios smarter and more flexible.

In this talk various ways of achieving the flexibility of radios will be discussed, with emphasis on approaches based on declarative representations of radio knowledge in formal languages and (logical) inference-¬based processing. In particular, cognitive radio will be presented as an intelligent agent whose performance depends on other communication nodes and thus its performance optimization must be done collaboratively. This in turn requires flexible signaling that goes beyond the fixed communication protocols.
