The state-of-the-art in vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) rests upon the following assumptions: (i) damage is related to loss of stiffness, (ii) damage will produce a change in the identified dynamic characteristics of the structure with respect to the undamaged state. Recent research carried out by Hernandez and others has shown that for fracture critical structures (those in which failure of a single member results in the collapse of the complete structure) the traditional damage detection approach for SHM is not adequate, especially for those structures susceptible to cumulative damage such as fatigue, which accumulates without significant degradation of stiffness. Appreciable changes in the global vibration properties only begin to appear after cracks have grown to an extent where strength has dropped dramatically. At this point, the structure will be at the verge of collapse or might have already collapsed due to self-weight.
