Professor Robertson's talk will use photographs and maps to explore the various ways airplanes have shaped three areas: 1) fuel, aluminum, and other resource use; 2) the spatial arrangement of people and things on the planet; and 3) American knowledge about the natural world. Examples come from the entire twentieth century, but the emphasis will be on the transition to jets in the 1950s and 1960s.
