Physics Colloquium, "Assessment of an Internal Exposure to Radioactive Material at a Nuclear Power Plant, " by Dr. Clayton French, Director of Radiologiackal Sciences in the Department of Physics, UMASS Lowell

Science / Technology - Colloquium

Monday, February 11, 2013
4:00 PM-5:00 PM

Olin Hall
107

This presentation will show how physics is applied to model the human body to assess the exposure of a worker who inadvertently inhaled or ingested radioactive material while working on the steam generator of a nuclear power plant. Measurements of the gamma radiation emitted from the lungs were used to determine the radioactivity in the worker at various times after the exposure. These bioassay measurements were used to determine whether the contaminant was inhaled and/or ingested and to assess the workers intake and dose.

Dr. Clayton French is the Director of the Radiological Sciences Program in the Department of Physics and Applied Physics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Dr. French is a Certified Health Physicist who specializes in internal radiation dosimetry.
