ABSTRACT: Collective dynamics gives rise to remarkable patterns, but can also impair or enhance physiology, modify selection pressures and lead to unexpected behaviors. I will discuss a few examples that touch on the functional consequences of collective motion in specific settings that include (i) the hydrodynamics of vaso-occlusion (jamming) in sickle cell disease, (ii) the geometry of sperm cooperation in a competitive environment and (iii) the motion and stasis of simple autonomous powered tooth-brushes, aka bristlebots.
