Lecture by Todd Allen, PhD, Scientific Director, Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility

ABSTRACT
The Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility (ATR NSUF) was created in April 2007 to provide a mechanism for research teams outside of the Idaho National Laboratory to conduct nuclear technology research and development using a singular national asset. Since the creation of the User Facility, five universities have initiated experiments through the NSUF. This presentation will cover three topics. First, the ATR NSUF capability will be explained and methods to interact with the User Facility described. Second, the basic mechanisms of radiation damage in materials will be explained to provide insight into why reactor testing is required. Finally, some examples of research in the ATR will be highlighted.

BIOSKETCH
Prof. Allen is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin Madison since 2003. Prof. Allens research expertise is in the area of materials related issues in nuclear reactors, specifically radiation damage and corrosion. Dr. Allen has established the Extreme Environment Laboratory equipped with facilities for a wide array of high temperature studies as well as the ion beam laboratory for radiation damage studies. Dr. Allen is also the Scientific Director for the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility at Idaho National Laboratory, a position that he holds in conjunction with his faculty position at the University of Wisconsin.
When a charged particle moves in an electromagnetic (em) field, it experiences a velocity-dependent force, called the Lorentz force. A similar kind of situation can be created for a system of ultracold neutral atoms in a magnetic trap, even though they are chargeless, by rotating the system. Recently, Lin et al., [Nature 462, 628 (2009)] created an optically controlled magnetic field in which ultracold neutral atoms experience an effective gauge potential like a charge particle does in an em-field, without any rotation of the system. We have theoretically studied the vortex states in a two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) in a toroidal trap and obtained a condition where a quantization event occurs. Starting from the concept of a two-component pseudospin-1/2 BEC and the creation of an effective gauge potential in ultracold neutral atoms, I will present our current work on vortex quantization in a two-component toroidal BEC.

I spent the summer 2010 in Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS), a theoretical division within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Today I will not only present my work at LANL, but will share my travel experience in and around Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Engineering is regarded as a learned profession similar to medicine and law. What does it mean to be an engineering professional? Does this mean that in the practice of their profession, engineers are (should be) held to a higher standard of conduct than the general population? This presentation first explores the fundamental cannons of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) code of ethics for engineers and how these statements should influence the daily activities of persons engaged in the engineering profession. The second part of the seminar presents a number of highly publicized case studies where engineers were confronted with very serious ethical dilemmas. Finally the speaker will present a number of ethical dilemmas that he has faced in his professional career.

Joseph Farbrook presents videographs. The videograph project was originally conceived as a reaction to the inherent sterility of digital artwork. Although digital art can be fascinating technologically, it generally lacks presence of the artist. For this reason it often fails to move a viewer emotionally and the communication between the artist and viewer is missing.

(WPI Only)
For the past 8 years, Richard Primack and his colleagues have been using a combination of historical records and modern observations in Concord and elsewhere in Massachusetts to determine if a warming climate is affecting plants and animals. Most notably, Prof. Primack has shown that plants are now flowering 10 days earlier than when Henry David Thoreau made his observations in Concord. In contrast, there are minimal effects of a warming temperatures on bird arrival times.
