Harvey Diamond (p) Rick Maida (b) Scott Goulding (d)
Pianist Diamond maintains a bit of mystery around his public image by simply being himself and eschewing self-promotion. The little we do know about Harvey Diamond is that he grew up in California and received a BA in music performance from San Francisco State College. He moved to the east coast and studied for eight years with one of the most important pianists and pedagogues in jazz, Lennie Tristano; he continues to promote Tristano's concepts in education and performance. Diamond has offered concerts and workshops at Harvard University, Berklee College, Boston University, the Royal Conservatory of Music in the Hague, the University of Southern Mississippi and many other institutions. He has performed with many other great musicians including Art Farmer and Sheila Jordan. Harvey Diamond is now one of the most highly regarded piano teachers and performers in Boston.
When I think of Harvey I think of true improvisation: nothing played the same way twice. Endless new ideas picking up where the last one ended. An embrace of the whole piano: the very high and the very low played with the same feeling and depth that makes you hold your breath.
Diamond is an unsung hero of the Boston jazz scene. He was among Lennie Tristano's last students in and has performed with Sheila Jordan, Dave Liebman and Art Farmer.
