EXHIBITION EXTENDED!

Icons are often defined as pictorial representations of Biblical stories, historical events from the Church, and/or portraits of the Saints. Iconographers used a combination of written descriptions along with earlier icons to create authentic paintings. The depiction of incorporeal or intangible subjects presented more of a challenge. The great masters of iconography developed the use of symbolism to depict otherworldly beings and imprecise subjects such as angels, demons, prayer, and wisdom. Over time, these developed into beautiful and sometimes mysterious images.

The exhibition Imaging the Invisible: Angels, Demons, Prayer and Wisdom incorporates 60 icons and artifacts from the Museum of Russian Icons collection depicting uncanny, ethereal subjects and concepts. This exhibition includes a mix of new acquisitions and previously unrevealed icons. This unique and creative exhibition is curated by Museum of Russian Icons Registrar, Laura Garrity-Arquitt.
