THE VOYAGE OF THE BLACK MADONNA with ALESSANDRA BELLONI
A musical journey to the ancient sacred sites of the Great Mother Goddess

Please join us for this special concert, which features healing chants and drumming in honor of the Black Madonna from the traditions of Southern Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Brazil, & Mexico. The Cult of the Black Virgin is popular all over the world, and this is a musical journey to these sacred sites. Come with us on THE VOYAGE OF THE BLACK MADONNA.

This unique event features excerpts from the Folk Opera written by Alessandra Belloni with composer/music director John La Barbera. This concert features a special collaboration between Alessandra Belloni as mezzo soprano, percussionist and ritual dancer, with Dina LeDuke as narrator and Brian LeDuke as assistant percussionist. The concert will include rare chants that have never been heard outside of folk ceremonies in Italy. There are also several chants from Brazil, Portugal, Spain, France, and Mexico, and original chants used in rituals whose myths and legends honor the Great Mother. Alessandras intention is to create a cross-cultural musical celebration as an expression of the healing power of feminine energy. Listeners will be taken on a spiritual and musical journey through the ancient sites of the Great Goddess, which in the Christian era have become sanctuaries of the Black Madonna.

The concert blends women's voices with traditional instruments and rhythms found in the different cultures that settled the South of Italy, including Greece, Turkey, North Africa, the Middle East, Celtic France, and Spain. Their instruments and rhythms blend together, joined by passionate voices and the native trance dances of Naples, Calabria, Puglia, Sicily, and Sardinia. The ancient Mediterranean sound created in THE VOYAGE OF THE BLACK MADONNA is combined with contemporary world music making a bridge between primitive, traditional, and modern music. This brings people together through the universal connection of the Great Mother Earth Goddess, creating a spiritual and joyous celebration. Do not miss this transformational experience!

Alessandra Belloni is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso of the frame drum and tambourine, and is the only woman both in Italy and the US specialized in this technique, thus bringing it back to its female origins. She has her own line of signature series tambourines made by REMO inc, the largest percussion industry in the world. Proceeds from this concert will help Alessandra to fund her theatrical project in New York City, bringing the traditional music and dance of Southern Italy to the wider world.
