FALL SEMESTER II BEGINS NOV 3 AND ENDS DEC 19TH, 2009. CLASSES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Gypsy Fusion Bellydance with Dina, Tuesdays 7-8pm.
This lively, intermediate-level class is Dina's own particular brew of Folkloric, Cabaret, and Tribal Style bellydance. Dina has been perfecting her Gypsy Fusion style for a decade, while performing as a featured "Gypsy Dancer" at various events around the Northeast. She blends elements of Tribal and Cabaret bellydance with Folkloric Gypsy dances from the Middle East, Asia, and Europe for an earthy and high-spirited dance experience. Class includes warmup, drills, choreography, and character work. We dance to many exciting
world music flavors, including Greek, Turkish, Spanish, Arabic, Romany/Gypsy, and various fusions. Be ready for lots of high energy combos, shimmies, and rhythm techniques such as the Turkish 9/8, the Arabic drum solo, and more!
Tribal Fusion Bellydance with Rihana, Tuesdays 8-9pm.
Rihana has studied with such notable Tribal Fusion artists as Rachel Brice, Kami Liddle, Zoe Jakes, and Troupe Zafira, and now she brings their amazing techniques to you. She is well-versed in the yoga training methods that give dancers the strength, flexibility, and graceful posture crucial to Tribal Fusion Bellydance. She will teach you the movement vocabulary that makes up this distinctive style: fluid hands and arms, staccato hip and shoulder isolations, popping and locking movements, floorwork, and theatrical expression. Choreography focus will be based on student interest and skill level; her current class is intermediate level but is also open to new students. Be sure to bring your water bottle, and a yoga mat if desired, for this intensely isometric class.
"Belly-robics": Basic Bellydance Workout with Dina, Wednesdays 7-8pm.
Want to do some sweating and get in shape? Want to drill those basic bellydance moves until you know them inside and out? Want to stretch and strengthen your body so that you are a better-conditioned dancer all around? Then this class is for you. Dina drills the bellydance basics in aerobic-style combinations that are easy and fun to follow.(She also breaks down each movement until everyone "gets" it.) Move your hips to dance club mixes and techno-Gypsy music, while also getting a full warm-up and cool-down to take you through the complete conditioning experience. This is a perfect class for beginners who want to go over basic technique, or for any dancer who just wants to drill and work out!
Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) Bellydance with Moirae, Weds 8-9pm.
Learn the popular form of Tribal bellydance now known as "ITS". This style is famous for its graceful yet earthy movements, based on synchronized group improvisation. ITS is a melting pot of flavors: Egyptian folkloric, Turkish, classical Indian, North African, Flamenco, Gypsy, and other kinds of ethnic dance. Learn about the Improvisational group dynamic, using cue-based combinations to create a unique, playful, and ever-changing performance with your fellow dancers. ITS is taught by members of Troupe Moirae, an
up-and-coming Tribal and Fusion Bellydance troupe. Moirae's dance style is inspired by many local and international artists, which gives them a well-rounded dance vocabulary. This class is multi-level and ongoing, with new students always welcome.
Veil Dancing with Brooke Bishara, Thursdays 7-8pm.
This semester, Brooke is offering an exciting, dramatic veil choreography in the classic Cabaret style. This class will include basic veil instruction, as well as more challenging moves, so all levels of dance experience are welcome! Emphasis will be placed on making the veil "sing" to the very passionate music we'll be using. Don't miss this class; it will be the last one Brooke is teaching before her "maternity leave" starts in January! :D Veils may be purchased at the studio, or borrowed from the instructor. Practice CD and notes provided.
American Cabaret Bellydance with Sabrina, Saturdays 1-3pm.
Learn the art of bellydance from the consummate professional bellydancer! Sabrina, the award-winning choreographer and house dancer for the Middle East Restaurant in Cambridge, explores various stylizations and interpretations of the Art of Bellydance as performance art from a Cabaret perspective. Many aspects of bellydance performance are reviewed in each class, including hip work, isolations, floor work, drum solo, and props. Please bring your finger cymbals and veils to each and every class, and come dressed for a dance workout. *1-2PM FUNDAMENTALS OF BELLYDANCE* - Suitable for novice dancers as well as experienced dancers who are new to Sabrina, this class is fundamental but multi-level. Class incorporates rhythmic limbering and movement rehearsal, movement vocabulary break-down, and bellydance isolations and techniques, that will prepare the student to bellydance within the broadest range of styles. Use of props will be introduced here. *2-3PM REPERTOIRE CLASS* - assumes a basic level of understanding, and an ability to execute the movement vocabulary that has been introduced and drilled in the Fundamentals section. Repertoire introduces the experienced student to Sabrina's more sophisticated combinations and professional choreographies, for pieces intended for performance, including student showcases. NOTE: Fundamental Class may be taken alone, but Repertoire MUST be taken with Fundamental in order to ensure that students have a basic competency in Sabrina's dance style.
