In recent years I have gone beyond the visual texture of my photographs to the tangible textures created by printing to various surfaces. My favorites at present are linen and metal. Gordon Library, Gladwin Gallery, Ground floor, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA "Invented" highlights patents by WPI faculty, trustees, alumni, and staff from Ichabod Washburn's machine to temper steel wire to Al Hoffman's arm orthosis. Great men from Worcester history, who were also associated with WPI as students, faculty, or trustees, such as Ichabod Washburn, Lucius Knowles, Horace Wyman and are included, as are former WPI students radio magnate Atwater Kent, and Dean Kamen, famous for the invention of the Segway. Research currently being conducted at WPI in the fields of metals processing, nanofibers, and medical sensors for use within the body are highlighted in patents of Diran Apelian, Glenn Gaudette, and Ki Chon. Many other WPI inventors are represented in the exhibition. which also explains the patenting process, patent components, and types of patents. Kennedy to Kent State: Images of a Generation (Wed, May 22)

Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA The Worcester Art Museum presents an exhibition of some of the most powerful American photographs of the 1960, the images through which the country shared that dynamic period and by which it is remembered. All from the museums permanent collection, these photographs were collected by Howard G. Davis, III to recall and reflect upon his memories of the era that had formed his personality. The images date from 1958 to 1975, and include the presidency and assassination of John F. Kennedy, as well as the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the American space program and its mission to the moon, the antiwar movement and counterculture. The exhibition is largely comprised of file photographs, vintage prints used in news media production and design. These were printed by the publishers, and used in editing meetings, for layout, and even as camera art in newspaper and magazine production. In the 1990s, when news publishing corporations began to digitize imaging and reproduction functions and build electronic libraries, these objects were discarded or released onto the market. Some of the photographs are pristine, while others carry photo lab spotting and touch-ups, editors notes in grease pencil, or the scars of newsroom haste. Other prints are second generation enlargements or wire photos printed along with publication captions. Many of the prints were stamped or inscribed on the back with a record of each use, and in this way they reveal their own history, and carry powerful qualities as artifacts. Worcester Art Museum, Japanese Gallery, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA Click here to see exhibition Born in a humble dwelling at the bottom of a valley, the print artist Imamura Yoshio still lives in the Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture. Memories of wandering amidst fields, woods, streams and mountains and of gazing at the stars at night inspire him. Moved by the evocative beauty of wild flowers and vines, dilapidated village huts and heavenly constellations, Imamura records his insights into the transience of life as well as his reverence for the enduring spirit that merges both history and evolution. Imamuras haunting works, which combine an exploration of subtle textures, colors, patterns and shifts in nature as well as geometric shapes and mysterious signs, are created using mixed media (etching, engraving, woodblock, aquatint, chine collé, collagraph, gold, silver, copper and black leaf). The Allure of Blanc de Chine (Wed, May 22)

Worcester Art Museum, Chinese Gallery, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA Blanc de Chine (lit. "white of China") refers to a white ware that was produced for centuries in the town of Dehua in the coastal province of Fujian. The sugary white clay of the Dehua area is made from a porcelain stone that is unusually low in iron impurities and fuses with the applied transparent glaze during the firing, producing works of a glossy, smooth quality that resembles ivory or white jade. Extremely resistant to the distortion that can be caused by high-temperature firing, the clay is ideally suited for the production of thickly potted, press-molded and/or sculpted vessels and figurines for the scholar's table or family altar. Many such functional and decorative works are finely detailed or embellished with applied relief decoration, such as blossoms or dragons. Porcelain production began in Dehua as early as the Song dynasty (960-1279) and flourished from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. At first widely exported to Southeast Asia and Japan, blanc de Chine soon also found a market among European royalty and aristocrats when it was imported by various European trading companies. Western interest in blanc de Chine gradually waned as Europeans discovered the secrets of porcelain manufacture. Dehua kilns have continued to produce white ware figures into the modern age; these late versions are usually slip-cast. Through Saturday, Aug 31.

ArtsWorcester, 660 Main Street, Worcester, MA The Fifteenth ArtsWorcester Biennial Exhibition, one of the regions most important art events, begins on Friday, April 12, is running through May 31st, 2013. Both the opening and the exhibit are free to the public. For thirty years, the ArtsWorcester Biennial has offered local contemporary artists an opportunity to show their finest work to a broad public. Artworks by both established and emerging artists were selected for exhibition, with all media represented: painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, fine craft, mixed media, and photography. All but two works in the exhibit are available for purchase, with prices ranging from $200 to $2,600. Katherine French, Director of Danforth Art, juried the exhibition. Out of 259 works, she selected 102 works for exhibition, with 21 artists recognized with awards. While a dramatic, large-scale sculpture was named Best in Show, photography is particularly strong in this years Biennial. Dr. French recognized this regional strength by dividing the Best in Photography award among three artists. The 2013 ArtsWorcester award winners are: Sally R. Whether depicting ancient legends, religious themes, or political caricatures, Matryoshkas can reveal a subtle narrative as one bell-shaped doll opens to reveal the next one insideabout the history of Russia. The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, a folk crafts painter in the Abramtsevo estate of the Russian industrialist and art patron Savva Mamontov. The dolls in the exhibition were selected from a private San Francisco collection of wooden dolls, one of the largest collections of its kind in the United States. They provide a visually rich source of learning for adults and children. The dolls were produced over several decades and include pre-WWII dolls as well as dolls from various regional centers of Matryoshka production during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. The exhibition also features unique Matryoshka dolls painted by recognized masters of Matryoshka painting. The Flair duo includes Roger Fluet on acoustic guitar and Lee Villaire with vocals & acoustic guitar. Lee is a New England singer/songwriter of whats been best described as sensual bluesy rock. Her unique writing style runs the gamut from playful to poignant, emotionally delivered by this powerhouse vocalist. She hails from Montreal and has been writing music since the age of 14. Shes penned tunes for blues legend Bob Walsh and Scottish country band Evangeline, released her first solo CD in 2001 and has won Honorable Mentions in the International Unisong and Billboard songwriting competitions. Raised in a small mill town outside of Boston, Roger Fluet learned to play guitar in his teens and soon began playing in rock-n-roll bands. Without formal training, he developed a style very different from most. Call his style country, infused folk/rock music... but it is his driving acoustical sound that propels many of his songs, resulting in tunes where the listeners are prompted to tapping their feet and cant seem to control themselves. As previous host of the musical workshop Songwriters Roundtable, he found inspiration and also fine-tuned his composition, recording, and marketing skills. You won't be sorry. Think Allman Brothers meet Neville Brothers. Think James Brown, Government Mule & The Meters jammin' in a smoky New Orleans after-hours joint. The Brotherhood's incendiary front line consists of one of the last great southern soul singers, percussionist and vocalist extraordinaire Cyril Neville (Neville Brothers, the Meters), lead guitarist and singer Devon Allman (son of Gregg, nephew of Duane) and award-winning blues guitarist and songwriter Mike Zito. The powerhouse rhythm section of bass player Charlie Wooten (the Wood Brothers) and drummer Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman) rounds out the Brothers' lineup. Incubated in the heat and humidity of a New Orleans summer, Cyril, Devon and Mike began jamming at a secluded studio in the city's Garden District. When the musical sparks began to fly and the personal chemistry coalesced, they began to explore the real idea of forming a band. Their debut show in September, 2011 at the city's Rock 'n' Bowl tore the roof off the place and launched a horde of YouTube videos that burned across the internet. RSB has it all: incendiary playing with the twin lead guitars of Allman and Zito; Neville's funky percussion work woven into the solid rhythm section of Wooton and Scott; lead vocals and three-part harmonies that drip with soul and passion; and a boatload of songs that deliver on the promise of what this band brings to the table with its musical chops. Their highly anticipated debut recording, "Royal Southern Brotherhood," was released by Ruf Records in May, debuted at #5 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for 17 weeks. As Cyril Neville says, "this new band makes a mighty good gumbo." And he would know... Bon appetit.
