WPI: George C. Gordon Library, Class of '41 Gallery, 3rd floor, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA
Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s (WPI) Gordon Library Class of ’41 Gallery will feature an exhibit for the Halloween season on New England gravestones. On display will be gravestone rubbings created with foil and on paper by Judith Trainor. In her work, Trainor captures the imagery of death including skulls, skeletons, hourglasses, winged cherubs, birds and flowers. The rubbings are done with light-weight foil to show the depth of carving and design detail. Trainor has taken this form of gravestone rubbing in new directions by using a variety of foils, finishes, rubbing techniques, and framing methods and applying them to different types of gravestones. Most of the impressions were done in the early cemeteries of Massachusetts but there are some from other New England states and New York. Through her work Trainor strives to interest people in exploring and preserving local burying grounds. There will be an artist's reception on October 29, 4-6 p.m.

Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA
A hybrid of photography, drawing, etching, sculpture and digital design, Actions Speak examines the frustrated relationships between government, and the news media pertaining to often unmentionable topics of brutality, domestic violence, HIV and AIDS. In Actions Speak, the artist duo THINK AGAIN takes on taboo social topics and raises the questions: How does policy affect individuals? Who is allowed to speak and who lives with the consequences? Nationally renowned artists and THINK AGAIN co-founders, S.A. Bachman and David John Attyah, are known for social issue art, which can be a platform for intellectual dialogue and can inspire individuals to social action. This project features a 67-foot interior wall mural in the museum's Renaissance Court, and a concurrent outdoor projection.

Upcoming projections:
2009 - Sept 17, Oct 15, Nov 19, Dec 17
2010 - Jan 21, Feb 18, March 18

Whether it is a photograph of your first birthday, a family outing to White City Amusement Park, a Memorial Day parade, or a riot in the streets, a photograph captures a moment in time. Together, they form a visual mosaic of personal AND community history.

Worcester Memories: Celebrating 325 Years is an exciting and rewarding collaboration between the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, Worcester Historical Museum, and members of the community.
This course will highlight and appropriate your uniqueness and special gifts as a Mission-Focused Leader--fuel for tough times. Reflection time is provided for new knowledge, tools and techniques where values, gifts, talents and conflict management tools will be explored. Leadership arises from personal integrity, mission and skill building for career and life empowerment. Mission-Focused Leaders are focused, effective, have personal integrity and a desire to empower their followers while leading a balanced, fulfilled life.

Mission-focused leaders are practical idealists who address challenges by facilitating trusting, supportive environments while keeping bottom line needs in mind.

The Mission-Focused leadership program invites participants to re-examine inborn gifts and strengths and develop new skills. At its core, the program is based on building confidence in an emerging or seasoned leader's personal passion and sense of mission as a foundation upon which to build new skills -- so needed in this crossroad moment of personal, organizational, ecological and economic history.

Virginia Swain is the author of A Mantle of Roses: A Woman's Journey Home to Peace (Xlibris 2004).

Valerie Claff, who teaches in the Studio Art Program at Clark University, and Timothy Nolan met in the summer of 1987 at the Studio School of the Aegean on the island of Samos, Greece. Twenty-two years later they live and work on opposite ends of the United States, but they continue to share an artistic relationship and friendship. "Trajectory" is a show presenting the work of these two artists today. While the work may appear to be very different visually, it is rooted in shared aesthetics, influences and inspiration. Both artists look forward to tracking how the dialogue they shared early in their respective careers continues to manifest itself today.

The Schiltkamp Gallery is open Monday through Thursday 9 am to 9 pm, Friday 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday 12 to 4 pm and Sunday 12 to 9 pm
Call for hours: October 9th-14th
508-793-7113

All information is subject to change. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum of Art, 224 Benefit Street, Providence, RI
In the early decades of the 20th century, the Museum's distinguished collection of American art was presented to visitors in elegantly proportioned galleries made possible by a gift from Jesse Metcalf in memory of his wife, Helen. Inaugurated in 1897, the Beaux Arts style Waterman Galleries now link visitors to the Daphne Farago Wing, to Pendleton House by way of the Porcelain Gallery, and to the 1926 Radeke Building. The rooms also offer a direct sightline through the Museum's new 20th-century galleries, and beyond that to The Chace Center. Two of the Waterman galleries are now reinstalled with highlights of American art from the permanent collection. On view are landscapes acquired in the Museum's early years of collecting, including Thomas Cole's sublime Landscape (1828), Winslow Homer's magnificent On a Lee Shore (1900), and George Bellows' Rain on the River (1908). John Singer Sargent's A Boating Party (ca. 1889), Theodore Robinson's Afternoon Shadows (1891), and Frank W. Benson's Summer (1909) are among the selections from the Museum's renowned collection of American Impressionist paintings.
Artists discover their inspiration in exceptional places, and retired Atlantic Union College art professor Roger Preston found his at the Museum of Russian Icons.

Preston's exhibition of twelve, small-scale, devotional paintings opening October 1, 2009 at a gala reception, 4-7pm at the Museum of Russian Icons is inspired by the Museums collection of more than 350 icons and will represents the first contemporary display since the Museums opening in 2007. The opening reception will include remarks by Atlantic Union College President Norman L. Wendth at 5:30pm, followed by Museum CEO Kent dur Russell, with a tour of the exhibition by the artist at 6pm.

These Festival icons, or those reflecting significant feasts of the Orthodox Church, reflect the traditional craft, themes and structure of this sacred Russian art form. The paintings merge traditional tempera on wood techniques with contemporary mixed mediaincluding computer generated drawings to create a fresh, modern look at devotional works intended to inspire and reflect deeply-held and personal spiritual beliefs.

This first contemporary exhibition launches a new program of working with artists interested inand their interpretation of the Museum of Russian Icons collected works.

Preston commented, "The museum creates a wonderful setting to develop creative ideas mutually intended for the artist as well for an observers artistic viewing pleasure of both the icons and the building."

The Modern Icons, Ancient Inspiration exhibition will continue through November 21, 2009.

Two for the road, featuring Chet Williamson and guitarist Steve Cancelli, continues its weekly residency at Vals Restaurant, 75 Reservoir Street in Holden.

With their bluesy approach to jazz, Two for the road presents standards from the Great American Songbook by such composers as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Harold Arlen, as well as jazz writers Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Paul Desmond. Also performing harmonica favorites, selections from the album Chromatic Swing, and originals, this potent duo will quickly establish Val's as the place to be on Friday nights.

Known for his distinctive jazz harmonica styling, Williamsons sound is reminiscent of his heroes on the instrument -- Toots Thielemans, Les Thompson and Bruno Defilippi. Fitchburg State College: Hammond Campus Center, Hammond Art Gallery, 160 Pearl Street, Fitchburg, MA
Inside Outside is an exhibition of Gillian Christy’s newest work consisting of sculptural wall pieces inside the Campus Center Art Gallery as well as outside--across the campus. This body of artworks is based on the familiar objects that one may view on a daily basis in existing architecture or industry. Christy states, “These objects’ shapes intrigue me enough to recreate them, skewing their perceived form, function and size. It also strikes me as humorous that these objects could potentially retain personality traits! Clearly, I create an imaginative world but often the underlying themes illustrated within the piece are serious in content.”
Cost: free
