To Be Determined
The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Best of all, census takers work right in their own communities.

Census taker jobs are excellent for people who want to work part-time, those who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community.

The Worcester Local Census Office is currently testing applicants in numerous locations in central Massachusetts. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and take a 28 question multiple choice test.
Apply now by calling the Worcester Local Census Office at (508) 635-8130 between 8:30 am and 4:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment to take the employment test.

For more information on Census 2010 and for the practice test, go to http://www.2010censusjobs.gov . At this site you can also download an Application Form (BC-170D) and Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) to take to the test site.

The U.S. Census Bureau is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Discover where the professor must have traveled in order to unearth such items as a Yeti, a Gargoyle skeleton, and the Argonaut probe.
Lois Lowry Radio Interview on AM 1280 WPKZ (Tue, Feb 9)
Lois Lowry is the author of over 20 books and winner of two Newbury Medals. Her books are used extensively in schools, provoking serious discussion about young adult issues. Speaking of her own writing, Lowry says My books have varied in content and style. Yet it seems that all of them deal, essentially, with the same general theme: the importance of human connections. A Summer to Die, my first book, was a highly-fictionalized retelling of the early death of my sister, and of the effect of such a loss on a family. Number the Stars, set in a different culture and era, tells the same story: that of the role that we humans play in the lives of our fellow beings.

This spring the community is invited to explore the writings of Lois Lowry through literature circles and book reading clubs, a public discussion and culminating in an evening conversation with Ms. Lowry.

Ice : Photo Essay by Jesse Dann (Tue, Feb 9)

8:00 AM-9:00 PM,

WPI: George C. Gordon Library, Class of 1941 Gallery -- 3rd floor, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA
The subject is ice, not the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, so consequential to climate change, but the variety of ice in local environments readily available to anyone in the Northeast--no special equipment. Jesse Dann photographs what appeals to him artistically, but through the filter of a scientist who is interested in natural processes and similarities to a wide variety of natural phenomena. For instance, in photographing ice on a local pond, Jesse was attracted to the luminous colors of fractures in the ice, and looking at my photos, most people assume they are nebula taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. His photograph is titled Nebular Ice, and the accompanying title card shows that comparison to nebula with two side-by-side photographs. Nebular ice is rare, only forming when we have many clear cold days with no precipitation and thick, black ice starts to crack under stress. The title card also points out the complex fracture patterns and the invasive water-milfoil, of interest to material and environmental scientists, respectively.

As an earth scientist with degrees from Dartmouth, Michigan Tech, and Washington University, Jesse Dann brings to his ice photography an appreciation for and understanding of crystallization. His post-doc research at MIT focused on komatiites in South Africa, the hottest lavas to erupt on Earth. These lavas grew large, paper-thin sheets of olivine and other spectacular crystal textures, which do not grow in modern lavas. However, ice crystallizes with similar textures, providing Jesse the opportunity to examine the relationship between textures and processes, while walking the dog through the woods and along shores of rivers and lakes. Jesse teaches Earth Systems classes with emphasis on students doing science in the field and discovering how isolated observations relate to the whole. In this photo essay Jesse has isolated images of ice for their interesting patterns and relationships, while the information cards create a thread, connecting the images to some larger concept or system. Jesses photographs have been accepted for juried shows at both the Emerson Umbrella and Concord Art Association.

Becker College: Weller Academic Center, 61 Sever St., Worcester, MA
Kaleidoscope is a photo/essay exhibit, attempting to address a single guiding question: "What is family?" This collection, created by Becker "Psychology of Family" students, includes original writing, representative quotes, and excerpts from transcribed interviews with local individuals who are living examples of the ways in which "family" is being redefined in the new millennium. Among those represented: a homeless family talks about their fears, a mother explains how she redefined 'family' after surviving the deaths of an infant daughter and teenage son, a single mother reflects on the joys and hardships of "the cards I dealt myself," and a family with 'two moms' talks about their journey into parenthood.

Employing ethnographic research methods, the students conducted, transcribed, and analyzed 39 interviews with more than 80 diverse strangers, catalogued over 60 hours of field observations, critiqued 21 pieces of popular literature and numerous articles from peer-reviewed journals, and photographed more than 200 representative artifacts.

For more information about Becker College, visit http://www.becker.edu.

10:00 AM-11:00 AM,

Mind Body Studio, 879 Central St, Leominster, MA
Learn Belly Dance, Tribal Style!

Julyana is teaching an Improvisational Tribal Style Belly Dance Class series that will have you up and dancing together on the first class! This dance style is a real "thinking dance" where you go beyond performing a piece of choreography and "connect" with your fellow dancers in a circle style. It is a grounded and earthy dance style performed within a synchronized group dynamic, all done improvised and on the spot! Tribal Style Belly Dance is a fusion of traditional Middle Eastern Dance and folkloric dance movements from India, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. We will prepare for dancing with stretches, posture review and a moving meditation. Then we will move onto learning slow moves, such as the Figure 8 Taxeem and body rolls; and fast movements, like the 3/4 Shimmy, Egyptian Basic with 1/2 turn, Arabic, Pivot Bump and Choo-Choo. Each dancer learns to communicate through body language and is mentally aware of her partners at all times. Class will also include simple line-ups, combinations, cues, and transitions. Julyana starts with the concept of lead and follow, and brings the class toward dancing as a group or tribe. No two dances are ever performed the same... and we like it that way! If you're looking for something different where you "connect" with the other dancers on stage, this is it!!

Breathing, stretching, and strengthening are an important part of each class. Julyana goes over each movement throroughly so that every student will understand. ITS is a great way for beginners to get to know belly dance, or for experienced dancers to expand their repertoire. Plus, the costuming is creative and colorful!!! All ages, shapes and sizes welcome.

ABOUT JULYANA:

Julyana is an experienced dancer who teaches and performs in Central Massachusetts for the past 15 years. She specializes in theatrical style, tribal improvisation, tribal fusion, and gothic style belly dance, but also teaches beginner cabaret at local events and studios. She performs at local events including Northeast Bellydance Association haflas, clubs, festivals, restaurants, parties and family functions. Julyana has performed as a soloist, but has also been involved with troupes or smaller groups. She is a current and founding member of the Velvet Moon Gypsies who have performed at the African Cultural Center in Worcester, The West Boylston Arts Festival, The Marlborough Heritage Festival, The Athenian Corner, Grotonfest, and many other venues and events. She has recently collaborated with the troupes Primal Redemption, Ambika Badi'ah and OmBellyCo and is a Middle Mass Northeast Bellydance Association member.

Check back for more classes during the week as well.
www.julyanadances.webs.com

Photographer Robert Alters MIT degree is in the photography of architecture. His art disregards both the rules of photography and, explicitly, architectural photography. The large-scale ink jet printsprinted on cotton rag paper or canvascreate a purposeful contradiction of surface and feeling.
Of this work Alter writes: The La Defense Portfolios are for me a way to observe and try to understand the corporate and commercial world that we are building for ourselves and that we must inhabit. The photographs have been taken over the past six years and are my exploration into this somewhat confusing and intimidating oversized world.

My photographs are not condemnations or political statements. The Atelier at the Sprinkler Factory is dedicated to classical realism and is located on the second floor of the old sprinkler factory complex on 38 Harlow Street in Worcester MA. Driving instructions can be found on the building's web site (www.sprinklerfactory.com).

Open, non-instructional figure drawing group meets every Tuesday Night! The format of the workshop is that one long pose is set for the evening. The Atelier maintains a large active list of models, therefore artists can expect a different model each week. The studio is equipped with easels and chairs and lite refreshments are provided. Artists must bring their own media. Walk-ins are welcome, but space can be limited, so we suggested reserving a spot in advance.

The workshop is a great resource for experienced artists in the area and is a great opportunity for young artists and students that need to develop a portfolio for art school.

Ronald M. Ansin Foundation Offices, 3rd floor meeting room, 1 Main Street, Leominster, MA
What is Toastmasters?
No, we don't make toasters!

From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 226,000 members in 11,500 clubs in 92 countries, offering a proven and enjoyable way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills.

Most Toastmasters meetings are comprised of approximately 20 people who meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian.

There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is evaluated by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved.

Good communicators tend to be good leaders. Some well-known Toastmasters alumni include:

    * Peter Coors of Coors Brewing Company
    * Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies
    * Tom Peters, management expert and author
    * Linda Lingle, Governor of Hawaii

Join Twin City Toastmasters for our weekly meeting. See prepared speeches, with evaluations, as well as improvisational speaking. Guests always welcome to join us at a meeting.

WOO Card/Student Discounts available. Swipe your WOO card to earn points!

Co-creators Bradley "Shooz" Rapier and Danny Cistone have collaborated with members of the award winning Groovaloos to create the hip hop sensation, GROOVALOO. Cistone, who also directs the production, worked with Rapier and The Groovaloos over a period of years exploring actual experiences of individual members and of the group as a whole. The process was challenging to say the least as various members were pushed to the limit, revealing their deepest fears and personal secrets along the way. Based on these true-to-life stories of The Groovaloos themselves, and told by the dancers who lived them, GROOVALOO combines the authenticity of A CHORUS LINE with the energy of STOMP as it embarks on a journey through the diverse world of hip hop dance. Driven by jaw-dropping displays of physical ability, a vibrant musical score and powerful spoken word poetry, the show's intertwined stories chronicle the struggles, hopes and triumphs of the 14-member cast as they discover the true meaning of family and share what it's like to be "in the circle".

"LIFE ISN'T ALWAYS CHOREOGRAPHED, SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO FREESTYLE."

Whether one is a dancer or not, this line heard by BoogieMan in GROOVALOO is central to the shows theme. There are moments in your life when you simply have to trust and continue to move forward when you have absolutely nothing prepared or seemingly nothing to offer.

GROOVALOO has played to critical acclaim and sell out crowds, grabbing the attention of celebrities such as Madonna, Pink, Laurence Fishburne, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaime Pressly, and Justin Timberlake, all who have come to see productions of GROOVALOO. From fear to freedom, choreography to freestyle, and ballerina's to b-boys, GROOVALOO has inspired audiences from all walks of life to celebrate their passion and purpose and in the process reveals the heart and soul behind this incredible art form.
