Tower Hill Library Book Group - 2nd Meeting
Saturday, 2/25/2012 1:30 PM-3:00 PM
- Included with Admission
Join fellow readers and garden lovers as we launch Tower Hill Library's first book group. Our goal is simple: we'll read and discuss interesting books from various genres on plants, gardens, nature and the environment. We'll include some well-known titles but also will try to offer books that may have been overlooked but still well worth our time. All titles will be in print, available in the Tower Hill Library, public libraries, and for purchase in paperback and other formats.

The group is limited to 20 participants and we are currently full. The book group will be free for members and included with admission for non-members. If you'd like more information please contact Kathy Bell at librarian@towerhillbg.org or 508-869-6111 x-116.

This week's book will be:
The Garden of Invention: Luther Burbank and the business of breeding plants / Jane S. Smith. Born of Worcester County soil (in Lancaster in 1849) Burbank went on to live an incredible life at an incredible time but these days is all but forgotten. The list of his "inventions"-- from the potato, to the Burbank rose and Shasta daisy -- is astounding, as is the glimpse of horticulture in the late 19th, early 20th century.

2nd annual Tower Hill Library Gardening Book Swap!
Saturday, 3/24/2012 10:00 AM-4:00 PM
- included with admission
Is your bookshelf overloaded with gardening books? Does it include books you haven't looked at in years, or maybe ever? Are there other titles you wish you had, or are you thinking of trying something new in your garden and would like to read up on it? Join us for the 2nd annual Tower Hill Library Gardening Book Swap! How does it work? Very informally! You cull gardening books and journals in good condition from your collection and bring them to the Tower Hill Library; then you look through the materials others have brought and choose a few you can use.
You get to clear out things you no longer need and get something new (to you at least)! What could be better?

Please contact Kathy Bell in the Library (508-869-6111 x-116) if you have any questions or wish to arrange drop offs before Saturday, March 24th. Thanks!

Sunday, 4/1/2012 1:00 PM-2:30 PM
- Members $18, Non-Members $22 - Sign up for both lectures and save! Members $32, Nonmembers $40 for both lectures
Creating Stunning English Gardens with Yankee Practicality
Learn great design tips and plant combinations from the gardens of Adrian Bloom, an award-winning garden designer and author from Dis, England. This instructional PowerPoint features a collection of inspiring photographs taken while I stayed at Bressingham Manor, a B & B in the heart of Adrian's magnificent seven acres of gardens. The lecture focuses on perennials, shrubs, bulbs, grasses, conifers and annuals hardy for the Northeast, as well as design concepts.

Kerry's other lecture is: Tips for Jump-Starting Your Gardens from 3-4:30pm on the same day.

Kerry Ann Mendez, owner of Perennially Yours in Ballston Spa, NY, is dedicated to teaching people of all ages the art of low-maintenance perennial gardening and landscaping. As a garden consultant, designer, writer, teacher and lecturer, she focuses on time-saving gardening techniques and workhorse plant material as well as organic practices. Over 10,000 people have attended her lectures. She has been in many national magazines including Horticulture, Fine Gardening, Garden Gate and Better Homes and Gardens' Garden Ideas & Outdoor Living plus her gardens have been in several published gardening books. She has been a featured guest on HGTV and was the perennial host for Capital News 9's In The Garden television segment as well as info segments for Channel 13. She is the garden columnist for Life@Home magazine and writes freelance pieces for regional and national magazines. As a presenter for Horticulture magazine's 2010 & 2011 national webinar series, her webinars attracted thousands of gardeners from around the country. In July 2010, she was one of four panelists (the only American) at world famous Adrian's Bloom's European Press Day in England. Mendez has conducted over 1,000 home garden and landscape consultations in Upstate New York and New England. She is a self-taught gardener with over 25 years of experience and a 'passionate perennialist' that enjoys mixing humor with practical information. Mendez's first book, The Ultimate Flower Gardener's Top Ten Lists, was released in March 2010; thousands have already sold. Her second book, Top Ten Lists for Beautiful Shade Gardens was released in March 2011 and is on a similar bestseller track. She is a member of the Perennial Plant Association, national Garden Writers Association, North America Rock Garden Society, and a federated garden club. Ramp up your garden's performance this summer with these proven spring primers. I'll cover key steps to do in April, May, and June that will reap magnificent, lower-maintenance gardens. A Q & A session will provide a chance to ask about flowers you may be considering (are they really hardy for our area?) and to address nagging gardening questions before another season begins.
