This concert, presented by composer and pianist Matthew Jaskot, derives its title from Elliott Carter's Eight Etudes and a Fantasy, composed in 1950 for woodwind quintet. The program consists of eight virtuosic etudes by Frederick Chopin, Claude Debussy, Gyorgy Ligeti and Augusta Read Thomas and three pieces that are improvisatory in nature, the first movement of Beethoven's famous Moonlight Sonata, a Bill Evans transcription and an original Jaskot composition. Jaskot is a faculty member in the music departments at the College of the Holy Cross.
