The Museum's soaring Main Gallery has been returned to its original splendor. This beautifully proportioned space has reopened as a picture gallery displaying the Museum's distinguished collection of European paintings in an installation that recalls the deeply stacked galleries of French and British salon exhibitions. Masterpieces from the Renaissance through the early 19th century - including many that have not been on view for some time - fill the walls.

This restoration was supported by the Champlin Foundation, Ida Ballou Littlefield Memorial Trust, and the Museum Associates.

American Art from the Permanent Collection
10:00 AM-5:00 PM Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum of Art, 224 Benefit Street, Providence, RI
In the early decades of the 20th century, the Museum's distinguished collection of American art was presented to visitors in elegantly proportioned galleries made possible by a gift from Jesse Metcalf in memory of his wife, Helen. Inaugurated in 1897, the Beaux Arts style Waterman Galleries now link visitors to the Daphne Farago Wing, to Pendleton House by way of the Porcelain Gallery, and to the 1926 Radeke Building. The rooms also offer a direct sightline through the Museum's new 20th-century galleries, and beyond that to The Chace Center. Two of the Waterman galleries are now reinstalled with highlights of American art from the permanent collection. On view are landscapes acquired in the Museum's early years of collecting, including Thomas Cole's sublime Landscape (1828), Winslow Homer's magnificent On a Lee Shore (1900), and George Bellows' Rain on the River (1908). John Singer Sargent's A Boating Party (ca. 1889), Theodore Robinson's Afternoon Shadows (1891), and Frank W. Benson's Summer (1909) are among the selections from the Museum's renowned collection of American Impressionist paintings.

Morgan Construction Company : Revolutionizing the Rolling Mill Industry Worldwide
WPI: George C. Gordon Library, Gladwin Gallery (Ground Floor), 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA
This exhibit highlights some of the key innovations Worcesters Morgan Construction Company brought to the rolling mill industry, beginning in the 1880s and continuing into the 21st Century. Included in the exhibit are models of mills and machinery, historic photographs, patents, and a drawing of an early Morgan mill. The inventions of Charles Hill Morgan and other Morgan engineers (many WPI graduates) made rolling steel and other metals into bars and wire far more efficient and safer. Morgan mills and innovations like the Morgoil bearing can be found around the world.

Morgan is now part of Siemens VAI, and the Morgan family has generously donated the companys archives to WPI, where they are now housed in Gordon Librarys Archives & Special Collections.

The Morgan family has been involved with WPI from its founding in 1865, when Ichabod Washburn asked Charles Hill Morgan to supervise construction of the Washburn Shops, where WPI students learned engineering hands-on. Throughout WPIs history, successive generations of Morgan men have served on the Board of Trustees, two as its Chairman.

There will be a reception Friday September 23 4:30-6 p.m.

Watch parts of an interview with the Morgan brothers at the online exhibit.

Extreme Sport: The Joust
Higgins Armory Museum (Closed), 100 Barber Avenue, Worcester, MA - Free with Museum Admission
The ground shakes as two warhorses charge. Each knight lowers his lance, a crash of spear on armor, a knight is thrown to the ground, the other rides around the field to the cheering crowd.

Skilled jousters were the star athletes of their day, and their fans included men and women alike, from across all walks of life, all of them drawn to the intense action, colorful personalities, and ever-present danger of this ultimate sport.

See a rare "rental armor" worn by socially ambitious townsmen in 1400s Nuremberg that still bears deep gouges in the steel from the impact of opposing lances, weapons and armor from the free-for-all "Bridge Game" played in the Italian city of Pisa, a war saddle from the 1500s, and more as you explore the pageantry of the medieval tournament. Be sure to heft a full-size lance and imagine how you might fare at this challenging sport as you take part in a Virtual Joust.

Exhibit Opens October 22, 2011.
